‘Travelling Photographic Histories: From 1950s Cape Town to Britain, and Back’. This is the new talk hosted by the Photographer’s Gallery with the journal Photography & Culture that will take place on the 29th March at 7pm.
Prof Darren Newbury will present an historical and biographical approach to photographs taken during the apartheid era in South Africa.
He will focus in part on a collection of photographs made by Bryan Heseltine in the early 1950s in three black townships in or near Cape Town as well as the Malay Quarter of the city and District Six. This is an opportunity to reflect on the recent ‘re-discovery’ of the collection and its meaning in the present for both South African and British audiences.
